Dragonhold Death and Loot Rules
Since Patch #1, death no longer strips your equipped weapons, shield, or armor — but greed still taxes everything else.
On November 13, 2025, Patch Notes #1 rewrote Dragonhold’s punishment model: upon death you no longer lose equipped weapons, shield, or armor. You still lose gold, XP, charms, unequipped equipment, items, and resources. That split defines modern extract mindset through Ashen Dawn, Hotfix 1.4, and version 1.0. This page is the durable ruleset plus habits that keep bags banked.
Confirm edge cases in your live build after major patches, then play to the spirit of the rule: equip what you cannot afford to lose, extract before Director pressure eats the rest. Cross-read How to Extract, Loot Guide, and Extract Checklist.
What you keep on death
- Equipped weapons
- Equipped shield
- Equipped armor
These slots are your recovery kit. After a wipe, you should still be able to fight your way toward another extract attempt without naked soft-locking — especially important for solo riders (How to Play Solo).
What you still lose
- Gold
- XP
- Charms
- Unequipped equipment and gear sitting in bags
- Items and resources / fragments meant for the Unified Forge
This is why inventory theater fails. A legendary in the backpack is a suggestion; a solid rare on your body is a plan.
Equip-before-departure ritual
Before every Azarkeen launch:
- Forge or upgrade at the anvil — Unified Forge.
- Equip the winners; leave sidegrades in stash if your hub supports it.
- Read Hand of Fate cards.
- Set a bag-value extract trigger using Risk vs Reward.
Charms and soft power
Charms are explicitly listed among losses. Do not treat them like equipped armor. If a charm defines your build, play more conservatively or extract the moment Director signals stack — AI Director.
Co-op loot after a death
Call deaths clearly on Fireteam Voice Chat. Decide whether to recover a downed teammate’s route or extract with partial success. Late joiners still get mission credit since Patch #2 — do not exclude them from the recovery plan.
Relationship to Unstuck
How to Unstuck is for softlocks, not for undoing a fair death. If you died to mechanics, accept the resource loss, keep your equipped kit, and plan a cleaner second run.
Castle and progression impact
Lost resources slow Town Buildings and Lair and Garrison plans. Lost XP slows personal power. Equipped gear retention means you are rarely forced into a full restart — use that mercy to take smarter fights, not greedier ones.
Common misconceptions
- “Death is free now” — No. Charms, gold, XP, and bag loot still hurt.
- “Rarity in bag is safe if I almost extracted” — Almost does not bank.
- “I can swap loadouts mid-mission without risk” — Unequipped pieces become death fodder.
Practice loop
- Run a mission with a hard extract timer you set yourself.
- Die once on purpose in a low-stakes session (empty bag) to verify which slots survive in your build.
- Adjust your equip ritual.
- Never again leave forge upgrades sitting unequipped.
Death rules are Dragonhold’s contract: the game respects your worn kit if you respect extract timing. Wear your best, bank early, and let the Director yell at an empty LZ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers tied to this page.
Do I lose all gear on death in Dragonhold?
No. Since Patch #1 you keep equipped weapons, shield, and armor. You still lose gold, XP, charms, and unequipped items.
Are charms safe when equipped?
Official Patch #1 text lists charms among losses. Play as if charms are at risk even when slotted; verify in your live build after major patches.
How do I protect forge materials?
Extract successfully before greed wipes. Materials in the bag are not protected like equipped armor. Use How to Extract.
